Climate trend

After quite a harsh winter that also saw some heavy snowfall – advantageous for the accumulation of underground water reserves – the spring was relatively warm, in accordance with seasonal norms. The beginning of the growing season occurred around 10th - 20th April, in line with the average in the area. The summer was very hot with little rainfall, so in some cases the vineyards were pushed to the limit in terms of the proper development of the growing phase. The rainfall in late summer and early September restored the vines’ balance and created the best conditions for the most important phase of ripening for Sangiovese. The grapes developed excellent properties, both from a health point of view and from the point of view of their analytical characteristics. The weather during September was good and very balanced: rainfall brought cool temperatures – especially at night – while the days were warm and sunny thereby fostering ideal ripening of the grapes.

Wine Spectator

The San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with 8,000 bottles produced) is a textured wine with hearty fruit and touches of smoked meat and spice. At its core, the wine offers dark fruit, blackberry and ripe plum. The rich fruitiness of the wine cedes to campfire ash, mahogany and furniture wax. These results are sultry and even a bit flashy, with distant background tones of teriyaki and plum sauce. The wine is fermented in cylindrical oak fermenters and aged in oak for three years. We'll see this bottle hitting the market sometime after February 2021.

Wine Advocate

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from San Polo displays a refreshing mix of wild strawberries, followed by notes of sage, mint and hints of white pepper. It’s a soft and pliant wine, casting pretty red fruits and hints of spice across medium bodied textures, while forming into a more salty and austere expression toward the close. Fine tannins grip the palate, leaving hints of cranberry and inner herbal tones lingering. The 2015 Riserva will require extensive cellaring to tame its hulking structure.

Established in 1995, San Polo is now co-owned by the Allegrini family and retired American distributor, Leonardo Lo Cascio. For the Riserva, a selection is made at harvest of the thinnest bunches with the smallest berries. It's a classy, polished example with a cherry and vanilla core offset by thyme, sous-bois and cedar notes. Layers of sturdy tannin provide a solid frame for the ripe fruit. Lovely purity of fruit with ultra fine tannins and depth, finesse and complexity. Black cherries, cedar and some flowers. It’s full-bodied with very fine tannins that drive the finish. Give it a year or two to open more, but already so enticing. Drink or hold.

Funkelndes, sattes Rubingranat.

“Cedar, forest-floor and rose aromas slowly appear on this full-bodied red along with spice notes. Firmly structured, the palate features cherry marinated in spirits, licorice and a hint of espresso framed in tightly knit, close-grained tannins. The slight warmth of alcohol lingers on the close.
