San Polo Diario della Vendemmia / Harvest Diary / 2020 23 Nel 2019 durante una stagione precoce ma fredda e piovosa, abbiamo deciso di seminare il sovescio e sfalciarlo molto tardi, per far sì che andasse a competere con l’apparato radicale della vite, assorbendo acqua che, altrimenti, avrebbe rischiato di conferire eccessiva vigoria. Quest’anno, invece, abbiamo fatto esattamente l’opposto, anticipando molte operazioni in vigna fra le quali la selezione del germoglio. Un primo passaggio è stato fatto piuttosto in anticipo, a metà aprile, per non perdere vigoria e per non causare sprechi di flusso linfatico a germogli non principali. Ricordiamo che a San Polo, come in generale in tutta la zona più esclusiva e storica di Montalcino, c’è la necessità che la pianta non sprechi mai vigoria. Questo ha comportato la necessità di un secondo passaggio, a metà maggio, sicuramente più veloce del primo ma comunque accurato, di controllo, asportando i germogli mal posizionati. In 2019, during an early but cold and rainy season, we decided to sow the green manure and mow it very late, to ensure that it competed with the root system of the vine, absorbing water that would have otherwise risked conferring excessive vigour. This year, however, we have done exactly the opposite, carrying out many operations in the vineyard earlier, including shoot selection. A first step was made rather early, in mid-April, in order not to lose vigour and to avoid wasting the flow of sap to non-main shoots. It should be borne in mind that in San Polo, as in general throughout the most exclusive and historic area of Montalcino, the vine must never waste vigour. This entailed the need for a second step, in mid- May, certainly a faster process than the first but still very accurate and aimed at controlling and removing the badly positioned shoots.
