San Polo Diario della Vendemmia / Harvest Diary / 2020 2 La prima parola che mi viene in mente ripensando alla vendemmia 2020 è sicuramente “ sorpresa ”. Ripercorrendo questa stagione così particolare non posso fare a meno di notare come si sia rivelata sorprendente in tutti i suoi aspetti, in alcune fasi in modo molto positivo, ed in altre decisamente meno. La partenza non è stata certo delle migliori, la situazione di incertezza generale ci ha fatto sentire spaesati e anche un po’ preoccupati, ma poi col passare dei giorni ci siamo resi conto di come la natura abbia i suoi ritmi, e di quanto questi ritmi siano in fondo indipendenti dalle “faccende umane” . Dopo un inverno mite e poco piovoso il germogliamento è stato anticipato, e a causa di un inizio di primavera più freddo della norma abbiamo avuto la prima sorpresa di questa annata, un qualche fiocco di neve a fine Aprile sui germogli già lunghi circa 10 centimetri. Ma ancora più sorprendente è stato vedere come le viti hanno reagito a questo stress inaspettato, rallentando la loro crescita all’inizio ma poi riprendendosi e superando le difficoltà, arrivando in fioritura con pareti fogliari spesse e ben sviluppate. Poi nel mese di giugno è arrivata l’estate, con temperature abbastanza alte e poche piogge, e le piante si sono adattate anche a questo cambiamento adottando uno sviluppo più conservativo, ma mai manifestando sintomi di stress idrico o termico. The first word that comes to mind when thinking about the 2020 harvest is certainly ‘ surprise ’. Looking back over this most peculiar vintage, I can’t help but notice how surprising it has been in all its aspects: positively so in some phases and decidedly less in others. The beginning was certainly not the best, as the general uncertainty made us feel confused and even a little worried, but then as the days went by we realized how nature has its own rhythms, and how much these rhythms are basically independent of ‘human affairs’ . After a mild and rather dry winter, budding came early, and due to a colder than normal early spring we had the first surprise of the vintage: at the end of April, some light snow fell on shoots that were already some 10 cm long. But even more surprising was how the vines reacted to this unexpected stress, slowing down their growth at the beginning but then recovering and overcoming difficulties, reaching the flowering stage with dense and well-developed leaf canopies. Summer arrived in June, with fairly high temperatures and little rainfall, and the vines also adapted to this change by adopting a more conservative growth, but never showing symptoms of water shortage or overheating.
