Climate trend

One of the best vintages in the last twenty years. The entire growing cycle of the vine took place under the best possible conditions. A cold winter with frequent heavy rainfall and low temperatures gave way to a dry spring with slightly above average temperatures , enabling uniform budding and perfect flowering. Showers in the summer months were scarce but fortunately heavy, which made it possible to carry out sustainable and environmentally friendly pest and disease management. Hot, sunny days with excellent day-night temperature variations enabled the bunches to achieve ideal ripening by the end of September: the berries were perfectly healthy and acidity was high, despite elevated sugar concentration.  The harvest of Sangiovese, which was completed by the end of the month, delivered perfectly healthy grapes with a very thick skin, a prerequisite for long macerations and for wines with great ageing potential.

Wine Enthusiast

The Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi offers great density and textural richness. I would say that this wine is most characterized by the quality of the mouthfeel that wraps smoothly and thickly over the palate. Dark cherry, tobacco, earth, plum and dark fruit add intensity and flavorful substance. The wine's full-bodied approach would match grilled meats or roasts. - Monica Larner

Wine Advocate

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is youthfully coy and restrained, requiring time in the glass to begin showing an understated display of dusty black cherry, sweet spice and rosy florals. There are depths of silky textures here, ushering in waves of ripe red and black fruits with a balsamic tinge and only a hint of round tannin to slow its progression. The finish is clean and finessed with notes of licorice and dried berries. This is nicely balanced, yet it lacks the depth and minerality I find throughout the better wines of the vintage.

Complimenti.

Guida Oro i Vini di Veronelli

Delicately perfumed and finessed, the San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Podernovi is very floral and lifted in personality. This vintage is very different than the inaugural 2015 vintage. I remember the previous release for its darker and blacker quality of fruit. This cooler vintage is more lithe and lighthearted, with building aromatic intensity that unfolds with caution and care. Once you've had the wine in your glass, it reveals a succession of sour cherry, wild rose and fresh lavender bud. There are light mineral dustings as well, and the wine is ultimately quite solid and structured. This bodes well for its aging evolution. Fruit comes from a two-hectare parcel in a cool and high position some 450 meters above sea level. The soils are clayey with schistous Galestro. Production is 13,000 bottles.

Guida Oro i Vini di Veronelli

“Vines planted in 1990 in this estate’s 7.4-acre Podernovi vineyard gave a floral, vibrant wine in 2016, just the second vintage for this single-vineyard Brunello. It unfolds with flavors of juicy red cherry, orange peel and subtle spices that give way to notes of fresh mushroom and forest floor, those earthy tones providing warm ballast for the vibrant fruit flavors. San Polo has been owned since 2007 by the Veneto’s Allegrini family in conjunction with Leonardo LoCascio.” - Stephanie Johnson

Guida Essenziale ai Vini d'Italia di Daniele Cernilli - DoctorWine

A tight, chewy red with plums and berries, together with orange-peel and dried-flower undertones. It’s full with fine tannins and a long, floral finish. Very reserved now. Try after 2023.

“Aromas of forest floor, grilled herb, camphor and pipe tobacco mingle on the nose of this full-bodied red. The firm, elegantly structured palate offers juicy Marasca cherry, red currant, licorice and coffee bean. Tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity grip the close and lend an ageworthy structure. Drink 2026–2041. Trinchero Family Estates. Cellar Selection.” —Kerin O’Keefe

Falstaff

A young brand but one that demonstrates a crystalline vision. Intensity on the nose, great presence of undergrowth: blackberry, blueberry and a pleasant spicy trace with a scent of licorice in the background. Taut and juicy mouth, salty tannins and a delightful persistence.
