Flowering of the green manure and buds on the swollen shoots
Throughout Italy temperatures are recorded above the seasonal average and with winters like these it is essential to postpone pruning to delay budding and drastically reduce the probability of damage from frost.
Fortunately, the vine shoots are characterized by acrotony (or apical dominance), which causes the apical buds to emerge first, which inhibits the budding of the underlying buds.
This feature allows us to start pruning when the highest buds are about to sprout (the basal buds will still be closed), giving us the possibility of delaying budding by up to 15-20 days, to position it in a period with less risk of frosts.
